Dr. Dirk Engelberg

BNFL Endowed Lecturer in Geological Disposal/Materials Performance, The University of Manchester

Dr. Dirk Lars Engelberg is Lecturer at the Corrosion and Protection Centre and the Research Centre for Radwaste Disposal (RCRD).

Dr. Engelberg graduated in 2000 from the University of Aalen, Germany, with a Diplom-Ingenieur (FH) degree in Surface Engineering and Materials Science. He then joined the Corrosion and Protection Centre, UMIST, and obtained his M.Sc. in Corrosion Science and Engineering in 2001. Dr. Engelberg completed his Ph.D. on “Grain Boundary Engineering for Intergranular Stress Corrosion Resistance in Austenitic Stainless Steel” at the University of Manchester, under the supervision of Dr James Marrow and Prof Roger Newman. In 2005, Dr. Engelberg joined the Materials Performance Centre (MPC) as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate, and was appointed Lecturer in Geological Disposal/Materials Performance at the Corrosion and Protection Centre in March 2010.
Dr. Engelberg’s research has mainly been concerned with the influence of microstructure on localised corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of stainless steels and nickel-based alloys. He also developed a keen interest in the characterisation of novel process routes for microstructure design and engineering. Working at the forefront of in-situ characterisation techniques, Dr. Engelberg is also very interested to advance the application of 3-dimensional X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for the in-situ characterisation of material degradation.
